The story of DAX by Detrios

DAX is the flagship product of Detrios, a software integration company founded by Justin Dagen and Jason Higley. We cut our teeth for 15 years working as customer-facing software engineers at a global access control leader where we were responsible for building a team that designed, developed, and supported custom software integrations for 90+ of the Fortune 100, higher education, K-12, government, military, and more.

In 2016, we formed Detrios to build our vision of a company that could work with customers to design innovative software integrations across a wide range of access control platforms and create an off-the-shelf software product to solve the unique access control challenges in higher education. Namely, how to effectively and efficiently manage room and building unlock schedules, temporary access to shared spaces, and temporary access for housing assignments to create a safer, more secure campus.

We knew many campuses were trying to manage unlock schedules manually and struggling with daily or weekly event reports, manual schedule programming, having an on-call administrator to program door schedules for last-minute events (or calling Campus Safety/Police to on-demand unlock a space). We also found that many campuses had decided that the alternate approach, unlocking doors 7am-10pm every day, was the only way to allow convenient access during “typical event times”. Both of these approaches have significant drawbacks, and nobody was happy with their approach – it was the perfect example of “doing the best we can with what we have”.

The problem wasn’t that colleges and universities didn’t want to secure spaces on campus based on actual event schedules. The problem was that there was no existing solution on the market that could integrate their event management system with their card access system.

The problem was that DAX didn’t exist yet.

So, what did we do? We built partnerships with the leading event and room scheduling, access control, and housing management platforms, and we created DAX. We worked closely with the Deacon OneCard team at Wake Forest University as the first DAX customer, and ran an initial 60 room pilot in 2017. The WFU team tracked time spent on various activities, including room/reader scheduling. The results were incredible…the WFU team had to run the numbers twice, and even then we could hardly believe what we saw. In the 60 room pilot, DAX saved WFU 15 hours per day that was previously spent manually managing the room unlock scheduling processes.

Since the initial Wake Forest University pilot, DAX has grown to support the most widely used access control, room scheduling, and housing platforms in higher education and now processes 2M+ events every year, helping provide safer, more secure campuses for 1M+ students at institutions ranging from regional colleges with 4,000 students to large state universities with 50,000+ students.
